Digibooks — Privacy Policy

Digibooks photographs a picture book, reads the words off the pages, and reads them back aloud. This policy explains what happens to those photographs and words. It is short because the app does very little with them.

What the app makes, and where it is kept

The photographs you take, the words read off them, and the audio the app reads aloud are all kept on your iPhone. Your shelf of books exists only there — there is no Digibooks library in the cloud and your finished books are not copied to one. What is sent away while a book is being made, and what happens to it, is the next section.

Because they are ordinary app files, they are included in your iPhone's own backup if you back your phone up to iCloud or to a computer. That backup is yours and is covered by Apple's privacy policy, not ours. Deleting a book removes its pages and audio from your phone, and deleting the app removes all of it from your phone. What the two companies below already hold is governed by their policies and is not deleted by deleting the app.

What is sent away, and why

Four things leave your phone, each only when the app needs it to make a book:

• A photograph of a book page, so that the words on it can be read. This includes the photograph of the cover, which is used to name the book.
• The words read off a page, so that they can be turned into speech.
• A record that a purchase was made, so the app knows what you have bought.
• A marker for your copy of the app, so it can prove it is a genuine copy and so purchases and usage can be counted against that copy. It is made up by the app on your phone. We never attach your name, your email address or an account to it, because the app never asks you for any of those.

Nothing else is sent — in particular, there is no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app has no third-party software of any kind embedded in it, and it reports nothing back about when a book is read, or how often.

Who else processes it

Two companies do the reading and the speaking on our behalf:

• Anthropic reads the words off each photograph. Anthropic deletes both what is sent to it and what it sends back — the photograph, and the words read off it — within 30 days, unless something is flagged for review under their own usage rules, in which case they may hold it for up to two years. Their terms say they may not train their models on it. • ElevenLabs turns the words into the voice the app reads in. They keep the words sent to them and the audio they make from them, in our account with them, under their own privacy policy:https://elevenlabs.io/privacy-policy

Neither of them is told who you are. We do not attach your name, your email address, an account, or any identifier of you or your child to what is sent — the app never asks you for any of those, so there is nothing to attach.

What is sent, though, is the page itself — so anything printed or written on that page goes with it. If a book is personalised with your child's name, or carries a handwritten inscription inside the cover, that name is part of the photograph and part of the words read off it. The voice the app reads in is a designed voice, not a recording of a real person, and it is the same for everybody. The app never uses your microphone and never records anyone's voice.

What we keep

We keep counts, not content: how much reading and speaking your copy of the app has used, and what you have bought. That is what lets the app know how many books you have left. No account, no sign-in below lists everything our side holds.

We do not keep your photographs, the words from your books, or the audio ourselves. The two companies above do hold what is sent to them, under their own policies — Anthropic deleting the photographs and the words read off them within 30 days, or up to two years if their own review flags them; ElevenLabs keeping the words and the audio in our account with them. Anthropic's terms say they may not train their models on what is sent to them. We do not read any of it ourselves, and we do not use it for anything other than making your book: not to sell to anyone, not to advertise to you, and not to train anything of our own.

No account, no sign-in

Digibooks has no accounts. You never create one, you never sign in, and we never ask for your name, your email address, or your child's name or age. What our side holds is: the marker for your copy of the app described above; what has been bought and used against it; a piece of cryptographic proof that the copy is a genuine one rather than a counterfeit; and ordinary service records of the requests themselves — that the app asked, when, how much, and the internet address it asked from, which every website and app receives as part of being connected to — kept for thirty days to run the service and find faults, and never including your photographs, your words or your audio. We never attach a name, an email address or an account to any of it, because the app never asks you for one.

Children

Digibooks is made for a parent to use with a child, so we treat it as an app children will be around. We never ask for a child's name, age, contact details or location, and there is nowhere in the app to enter them. There is no tracking of any kind, and because there is no advertising and no third-party software in the app, there is nothing collecting information about your child in the background.

One thing to know before you photograph a book. The app sends the page as it is, so whatever is on that page is sent too. Personalised books print a child's given name on most pages, and a gift book often carries a handwritten inscription inside the cover — "To Ida, love Granny, Christmas 2025". If you photograph those pages, that name goes with them: it is read by Anthropic and deleted within 30 days — or held for up to two years if their own review flags it, as above — it is kept by ElevenLabs in our account with them when the words are turned into speech, and it is read aloud when the book is read. We do not attach anything else to it, and we do not go looking at it. If you would rather a name did not leave the phone at all, don't photograph the page it is on — a book reads perfectly well without its inscription.

Purchases

Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Apple does not pass your payment details on to us — it tells us only that a purchase was made, so that the app can unlock what you bought.
